US SASSUOLO CALCIO vs FC LUZERN 3:0 (2:0)
After a 0:3 on the night and a total score of 1:4, the European campaign does not continue for FC Luzern. The boys in the yellow away shirts started better into the game in front of 13,415 spectators – of which around 1,000 travelled from Luzern. The first setback appeared after just eleven minutes, when Tomislav Puljic had to be replaced by Sally Sarr due to a muscular problem. The superb Domenico Berardi then scored after 19 minutes for Sassuolo against the run of play. The guests still had more bad luck after 38 minutes, when the internationally inexperienced Turkish referee blew the whistle, showed Ricardo Costa the red card and pointed to the spot. After the game, the staff of FC Luzern agreed that this red card was definitely too hard and that this situation decided the game. But further shortcomings by Luzern's defensive staff also allowed USS to leave the pitch as winners. The fouled player Domenico Berardi stepped up himself and doubled the lead. After the break the team from Italy played clever and scored another goal after one hour - Gregoire Defrel ended the dreams of FC Luzern to progress to the next round. After travelling home on Friday, the Super League continues on Sunday for FC Luzern against the reigning champions FC Basel 1893.

a strong start by FC Luzern
Everything was ready in Reggio Emilia. The temperature was still a hot 30 degrees at 20:30, the time of the kick off. The sky was cloudless and the 1,000 travelling fans were loud and supporting. Markus Babbel gave the nod to Markus Neumayr behind the attackers and Hekuran Kryeziu and Nici Haas played the midfield defensive parts. Luzern started well into this highly anticipated game against a powerful Italian side. But bad signs started appearing after just eleven minutes: Tomislav Puljic had to be replaced by Sally Sarr due to a muscle injury. Just ten minutes later the next setback – Sassuolo played a fast-paced attack over the right side and Domenico Berardi, who will move to Juventus Turin next season, used the given space well to score for the green and black shirts.

red card as an early decider
On the slippery pitch (it was only replaced a short while ago), the hosts found their way into the game, while the players of FC Luzern seemed to be a little bit shocked by what happened. After 37 minutes it was again Berardi at the centre of attention. The no. 25 of Sassuolo had a little body contact with Ricardo Costa inside the box and went to the ground. The Turkish referee puzzled many with a straight red card against the Portuguese central defender. Apart from this situation, the referee was faultless. A minute later Berardi scored his personal second. Luzern didn’t have a lot going for them at this point.

huge thank you to the fans
In the second half the Italian side played very cleverly. The game was in its final moments when the first shot on goal by FC Luzern could be noted. That was the result of experience in the back four of USS, as well as a keeper Andrea Consigli that performed better than in the first leg. The third goal for the home team by Gregoire Defrel killed all hope for a recovery. «Of course we are disappointed» said Dave Zibung after the game. But he also pointed out that the opponents were a decent Italian side with plenty of individual class which was played out as a team: «it is no shame to go out of the competition against the 6th placed of Serie A». Luzern can take away that they never gave up despite the run of bad luck. There was, however, a winner from Central Switzerland on this summer evening in Reggio Emilia – the travelling spectators impressed the Italian players by singing despite the 3:0-deficit. «we haven’t seen anything like it» comented the Italian journalist. Markus Neumayr also praised the 12th man: «our fans are incredible. It’s a shame that we were unable to reward them for their long journey to the game»

FC OBERWALLIS NATERS vs. FC LUZERN 1:4 (0:2)

After a 4:1 away win against FC Naters Oberwallis, FC Luzern progresses to the 2nd round of the Helvetia Swiss Cup. João Oliveira scored inside the opening five minutes for the guests on the pitch with the name of Sportanlage Stapfen. The final pass was delivered by Marco Schneuwly, who himself added a second for the team that plays in the Raiffeisen Super League. Saleh Chihadeh halved the deficit for the underdogs shortly after the beginning of the second half. The boys from central Switzerland controlled the game, but the home team carried on believing in their chance to land a surprise win in this game. Marco Schneuwly – who else? – ended those dreams with two goals after 83 and 87 minutes in front of a 2,188 strong crowd. “We started well but missed the goals for a commanding lead”, was the verdict by the top scorer. Markus Babbel was pleased overall with the performance of his team when he said that they were at the end of a couple of intensive weeks and today they progressed to the next round. He also complimented his boys.

    Early lead for Luzern and...

Jonas Omlin got the nod in goal for only the second time in his career for FC Luzern and he showed a decent performance. The team manager from the Bavaria region of Germany also exchanged his team on several positions. João Oliveira used his chance to show the manager what he is capable of in perfect manner, scoring after just three and a bit minutes. Marco Schneuwly started a move on the left that found the 20-year old. Jonas Omlin on the other side had to wait until the 22nd minute before he was able to show his skills. Nils Ryser left himself with a task when he put the ball too far in front of himself, allowing the concentrated Omlin to reach it before the striker was able to apply a second touch. After 30 minutes Lucas Hill almost scored an own goal but was “denied” by his own keeper. Luzern had to wait until the 43rd minute before they could double their lead. After a move involving Remo Arnold and João Oliveira, the ball ended up in front of Marco Schneuwly – and from there in the back of the net.

… the hattrick scoring Schneuwly guaranteeing the win

The second half started in the worst possible manner for the guests. Sally Sarr lost a ball in midfield and Saleh Chidadeh was able to celebrate a goal after 49 minutes. “We have stopped playing football in this period of the game” said Marco Schneuwly about the minutes when the hosts fancied their chances from a couple of set pieces. Hope returned for the home team at this point, but Luzern continued to control the game. Markus Babbel then performed a double substitution, with Jéròme Thiesson and Silvan Sidler replacing Claudio Lustenberger and Ricardo Costa. It was the first game for the young Sidler for the first team, and he put the icing on the cake with an assist. His pass from the half way line was collected by Marco Schneuwly who re-established the two-goal lead on this hot and sunny afternoon in the Southern region of Switzerland. The number 15 wanted more, and got it, just four minutes later, scoring his personal third of the day. “It is a good club with friendly people”, was the summary by Markus Babbel after the game in the Eastern part of this Canton, just before making his way home over parts of the alps.

FC Lucerne lost away from home against FC Basel 1893 1:3. The champions began with full pressure in the match and lead after only 34 minutes by 2:0, In the 19th minute Marek Suchy powerfully headed the home team into the lead. 15 minutes later Marco Janko increased the lead with the first of 2 goals. Lucerne’s answer to the attack came in the 36th minute with a goal from François Affolter. Ultimately the team from central Switzerland were the better team watched by almost 25,000 spectators. Cedric Itten, substituted in the 70th minutes had the equaliser at his feet – unfortunately he didn’t make it. “What a shame, the presentation from Filip Ugrinic was sensational. Of course I should have made this goal” the man from Basel criticised himself. While Lucerne sent everything forwards in the final stages of the game Marco Janko could make the decider in the 81st minute. “We started slowly in the match” said Markus Babbel after the final whistle but was pleased with his teams’ performance in the second half. Lucerne now have to be ready on Wednesday to play against FC Aarau in the Helvetia Schweizer Cup quarterfinals at Brügglifeld.

    Kryeziu as Captain

The Lucerne starting line-up was a surprise. Instead of Markus Neumayr came Filip Ugrinic and instead of Marco Schneuwly Tomi Juric started as forward. The team trainer justified his decision while he expected an intensive game against the table leaders and with the quarterfinal coming up in 3 days he wanted to protect these 2 players. As expected Fischer’s eleven started in high pressure mode. Lucerne experienced attack and attack from the beginning and were kept in their own half. Again and again Dave Zibung was in the middle of the fight and kept his team, with some spectacular moves, in the game. He had no chance against the hard header from Marek Suchy. Even after Suchy’s lead the game still only had one direction. It followed that the home team got another goal, this time from Marc Janko.

    Affolter's Catch up

After the second goal Lucerne woke up. They got their first corner after 36 minutes. The sharp pass from Filip Ugrinic landed at François Affolter’s feet and the central defender put the ball into the net with no discussion. From this point on the Lucerne eleven played as Markus Babbel expected. In the second half it was Lucerne who had more of the game and creating more problems for the table leaders. Even so the guests did not have many chances to be dangerous. The best chance had Cedric Itten in the 70th minute. The ball missed the target by about a meter. It should have been the rewarded equaliser but it was not to be.

    Janko's Double

Basel were always a danger. The decider came nine minutes before the end of normal time. Renato Steffan’s pass was perfect for Marc Janko, who with his double ended all Lucerne’s hopes. So was the disappointment clear in the Lucerne team after the final whistle. There is however no time to waste, on Ash Wednesday they have to be ready to meet FC Aarau in the quarterfinals of the Helvetia Schweizer Cup away from home in Aarau. A difficult and important game. “That will be a completely different game to today’s” said Dave Zibung, who played a brilliant game and saved his team from a worse defeat.

    Redaktion zentralplus
    Autor/in: Redaktion zentralplus

Zibung will Karriere beim FCL beenden
